Happy Monday! Babydoll, Tiered Popover, Empire Waist…whatever you may call it, in my personal opinion, this is one of my favorite dress silhouettes ever because it looks so good on many body shapes! Unless you’ve been living under a rock, I’m sure you’ve seen Hollywood celebs like Rihanna and Sandra Bullock rocking this style. It continues to re-enter our stores over the years and thus into our closets because it is truly one of the more forgiving shapes. These kinds of dresses have 3 great features: the empire waist, the fit and flare and the versatility.
If you are unfamiliar, an empire waist was first conceived in Napoleon times when Empress Josephine (hence the name) was influential in popularizing the style back in the 18th century. This kind of waist line is so interesting because it falls right below the bust line and a few inches above your natural waist line. The empire waist’s high line elongates the body making you appear taller and encourages a thinning shape. It’s like magic! Because of the high waist line that essentially cinches around your upper rib area, it allows the dress to fall in a fit and flare form. It is fitting enough in the bust to make it sexy, while still flowing at the bottom to give you an incomparable comfortability level. I love how versatile this silhouette is. You can dress it down to run errands with a pair of sneakers or sandals, dress it for work with a statement necklace and flats or dress it up for a night on the town with classic pumps. It can literally be taken from day to night.
If you are looking for your next classic basic, I highly recommend trying on this kind of dress. I have pulled together a few options from different retailers with a variety of price ranges. I’d also be interested to see what kind of silhouettes you are most into in the comments!
